If I recall correctly, the first time I ran Linux about seven years ago now I had to install tools to read external drives. Spend the time to fix the system problem, it will be worth it. If the problem is that you lack the tools to read NTFS you will not find any drive that will work on your system. Search for "read NTFS drive on (your distro here) linux" and you should be able to find instructions on how to get it working. I am on Arch and as far as I can tell the proper tools are just included as I never had to do anything except plug them in. Make sure you have the tools to read NTFS and you shouldn't have any problems. I have never had any problem with them working. I currently have five bone stock WD MyPassports running and I only use Linux.
